Wistom Synthetic Fiber Factory

13.09.2006, Tomaszów Mazowiecki

Squad: WzD, Urbanator

The noun 'factory' it's a bit degrading for Wistom - the area is about 150 ha (over 370 acres), and just before liquidation in '97, it was placed on '95 biggest polluters blacklist just after 'Bełchatów' Lignite Mine and Power Plant. In it's peak, the WISTOM employed almost 12,000 souls, and required three internal power plants. The former employes mention that pollution was so critical, that birds flying above the factory fell down reaching ground being dead.
The factory bankruptcy caused economical disaster in nearby city - Tomaszów Mazowiecki. The history of the place begins in 1911, when Tomaszów's Artificial Silk Factory was fouded. During WWII Germans used the factory halls for engine testing. After war, the demand for artificial fibers caused massive development of factory. In early 90's the relic, socialist management cannot adjust to free market, what resulted in bankruptcy in 1997. Since then, the place is abandoned and gradually demolished
